Direct Pipe ®: Latest innovation in pipeline construction - technology and references

Various methods have so far been applied for crossing works in order to build steel or polyethylene pipelines as pressure lines. Pipe jacking and segmental lining allow for the construction of protective tunnels with subsequent insertion of the pipe string. The HDD method, in contrast, includes the construction of a pilot bore prior to pipe pull-in. Recent developments such as the Easy Pipe method comprise jacking processes -- where tight connection interim steel pipes are pushed towards the target shaft, coupled to a pipeline and then pulled back together. All these methods include a two- or multi-step pipe installation process. The multilevelness of these methods and pertinent aspects such as costs and project duration led to the development of the DIRECT PIPE® method: Steel or polyethylene pipes can now for the first time be jacked efficiently and fast in one operation process.

The ORFEUS Project: a step change in Ground Penetrating Radar technology to locate buried utilities

There is a serious issue associated with the inability to detect and accurately locate buried utility assets and, as a result, too many holes are dug in the road. This creates problems such as traffic delays, leading to unnecessary fuel usage, and quality of life issues related to air quality, noise pollution and lost time. This is not a single utility problem and needs to be addressed on a European basis, with utilities working together to provide appropriate solutions. ORFEUS is a European Commission funded Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) recently begun with the aim of developing the next generation of ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems. They will raise the probability of detection of underground buried assets and, as a result, significantly ease their rehabilitation and/or replacement. The project will last for 36 months and will cost €5 million.

Humans are increasingly altering the amount of water that runs from the land to the sea or inland waters. Calculations with a global vegetation and hydrology model indicate that precipitation had the largest impact on global river discharge over the 20th century. Regionally, however, discharge varied according to factors such as land use change and irrigation practices, temperature, and the concentration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) report in the journal "Geophysical Research Letters". The impact of these mainly anthropogenically driven factors on discharge and the availability of water for human use is expected to grow in the future.

Soil electromagnetic mapping for enhanced GPR utility location

1. INTRODUCTIONThe Mapping the Underworld (MTU) project combines the expertise of four UK universities in an effort to provide new geophysical utility location equipment that will dramatically improve on the accuracy of current equipment (see [1] for more information). In order to achieve this goal, it has been recognised that there is a need to optimise the usefulness of data output by GPR equipment through knowledge of the electromagnetic (EM) properties of the soil. This aspect of the project can be considered an essential element as it is soil, and in particular the clay fraction, that determines the degree of signal loss that will occur and the velocity of the signal in the ground.

After five months of tunneling, a Robbins EPBM has completed its first bore in New Delhi. The machine is one of two Robbins EPBMs boring parallel 2.0 km (1.2 mi) long tunnels for the second phase of India’s New Delhi Metro Extension Project. A total of four machines are boring a new 5.3 km (3.3 mi) line between the Udyog Bhawan and Green Park areas for the Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC)/ Soma JV.

Analytical study on the ground movement caused by pipe bursting

Trenchless pipe replacement technology by ‘EXPANDIT’ using hydraulic expansion was established in March, 2006 in Japan, and we received the construction technology certificate of JIWET (Japan Institute of Wastewater Engineering Technology).This trenchless technology of pipe replacement has much effective features. However, many sewer administrators would consider that pipe bursting might damage to adjacent pipes or structures, therefore this pipe replacement technology cannot be used widely for sewer pipes in Japan. In order to solve such problems, we performed experimental pipe bursting operation focused on the ground movement at 6 span’s model pipelines in 2005. Consequently, the relation between a distance from existing pipe to measuring point and the amount of ground movement at that point has been understood, and estimation charts of the ground movement were attained.In this paper, we describe the numerical study about the ground movement associated with the amount of radial expansion, while these data following advancing analysis of the data were analyzed in detail, estimation of the ground movement was available. One example of vertical ground movement by pipe bursting operation can be described.

Giant Robbins machine embarks on hydropower tunnel

On September 18, 2008 the 12.43 m (40.1 ft) diameter Robbins machine was launched on a 16.7 km (10.4 mi) long hydropower tunnel in Sichuan Province, China.  The machine will bore one of four headrace tunnels, which will draw water from the nearby Yalong River, a tributary of the Yangtze. The large TBM will join another 7.2 m (23.7 ft) diameter Robbins machine, which was launched earlier in 2008 to bore a drainage tunnel on the same project.
